The Descent of Inanna: A Tale of Power and Transformation
Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth, was radiant in her power. She ruled with grace, adored by gods and mortals alike. Yet, within her, a whisper of something deeper called—a knowing that power was not complete without descent. And so, she turned her gaze downward, to the underworld, the domain of her sister, Ereshkigal.
Dressed in her finest robes, adorned with the seven sacred jewels of her status, Inanna approached the gates of the Great Below. She knocked, and the gatekeeper, Neti, regarded her with a knowing stare.
“To enter, you must be stripped of what you carry.”
At each of the seven gates, she was forced to surrender a piece of herself: her crown of sovereignty, her necklace of wisdom, her bracelets of strength. With each step deeper into the darkness, she was made more vulnerable, until, at the final gate, she stood bare before her sister, stripped of title, power, and self-deception.

Ereshkigal, veiled in grief and rage, sat upon her shadowed throne. She did not rise. She did not embrace her sister. Instead, she condemned her.
“Why have you come?” her voice was raw with loss, with fury.
Inanna trembled but did not turn away. She had sought wisdom, but now she faced pain—the pain of all she had ignored, of all she had abandoned in her rise to greatness.
Ereshkigal was the forgotten, the discarded. The wounds Inanna bore in her heart, Ereshkigal had carried alone. And so, as her sister’s judgment fell, Inanna was struck down, her body hung upon a hook in the void, lifeless.
For three days and nights, she remained in death, unmade. But far above, those who loved her pleaded with the gods. From the depths of sorrow came mercy, and through the intervention of Enki, the waters of life were sent.
Inanna’s body stirred, breath returned, and she rose—no longer the same, no longer untouched by suffering. She had seen the abyss and made peace with it. And as she ascended back through the seven gates, she reclaimed her adornments, but now they bore a new meaning. No longer mere symbols of status, they were reminders of the journey, of the power in surrender and the wisdom in pain.
When she reached the light of the world above, she was not just a queen, but a ruler reborn. A goddess who had embraced the shadow and returned, transformed.
From that day forward, those who sought to transmute their pain into power invoked Inanna’s name, for she had walked the path of descent and risen, whole.
